When setting out to write a football essay, there are a few traps that you might need a ‘heads up’ on. Rule number one: you’ll need to make sure you’ve got the right jersey on. Then you’ll need to define whether you are discussing the American sport, the English one, the Aussie one or the European? Yes, here is where the thing gets nearly as complex as the set of rules that the treasured game follows. The national obsession with American football requires an oval ball, helmets and body pads in strange places. The UK version is something quite different. The term ‘football’ covers a very large field. Is it soccer? And where does rugby fit into all this? Various countries have differing definitions for the term. If you want to lace up and write about these differences, you would find yourself on a winning team quickly. The reason why your coach has given you this game plan is the first question. Your football essay will unfold from there. Is the topic national differences, national devotions, rules and regulations, the history of the sport, the evolution of it, the link between the sport and various head injuries, the roles of its various positions, strategy and formations, the scoring and penalty systems, what makes an All-Star quarterback such a star, etc. From this huddle point, you can stride along towards your goal of writing a highlight-filled All Star football essay.
A five paragraph structure is simple and will move the game along far more quickly than a standard all-American version that stretches out into mind-numbing infinity at times… Some research will be needed and your sources will be cited to prove your center field argument. Watch out for your ‘blind side’ here: although the topic may be a free-wheeling action-packed sport, the football essay itself needs to hit all the marks that any other essay would:
It needs to be well-written and edited – this is not jock talk.
