While Chief Justice is often responsible to serve as a chair and usually is first to voice his or her opinion about a certain case, criminologist is generally defined as someone who does academic, professional and scientific studies about crime, its types, criminal behaviors, etc. Criminal justice and criminology involve in-depth studying of criminological theory and quantitative research methods which later will be applied in real-life investigations and policy issues.

Since Chief Justice “leads oral arguments from the center chair on the bench”, he or she has to be clearly and fully aware about all the criminological aspects of the case and provide their expertise in the court room. Sometimes CJ, if case of the majority of the opinion, he or she can write the decision themselves.

Criminology studies crime as social phenomenon and examines its cause and behavior, etc. On the other hand, criminal justice is more about policing, court system, and corrections. Criminologists can be employed by the government agencies or private organizations to do research or advise on specific cases and general criminal justice system. Criminologists have to be aware of all the development in criminal psychology and the system itself. In many cases these professionals do research and teach in classes such topics as law reforms, psychology, etc.
