The Irony of Death – Essay Sample

The Irony of Death – Essay Sample

Death is a terminal occurrence in ones life and much as people might like to disregard the fact that it is inevitable, one cannot go through life without having small incidences and occurrences remind him that they are headed towards the ultimate destination and that is death. Many writers as well as poets have composed literature that makes reference on death as a terminal occurrence in the life of people. Similarly, painful experiences that come about in life are also some of the many challenges that one goes through in the normal course of life. This however is not a respite to the challenge that one goes through in the face of such a not interesting future.

Courage is the ability to confront the most daunting of circumstances and possibly overcome them with the comfortable knowledge that one has succeeded in overcoming the challenges. The fearlessness one shows towards seemingly impossible tasks or in dangerous situations that threaten their very own existence is defined as courage. The fact is that whether one shows courage or not the circumstances facing them do not change and are therefore not responsive to their efforts to put up a strong resistance. Several circumstances therefore present one with highly daunting circumstances which are known to defy all human determination and efforts. It is in such circumstances that the effort one dedicates towards achieving the very much required success or reprieve counts for very little.

My entire argument is informed by two premises. The first premise is that we have no influence on terminal situations courage or no courage. This premise is based on the fact and knowledge that there some occurrences in ones life that are determined by superior forces and which human beings have very little influence on. There is a quite clear cut sequence of events which eventually culminate in an obvious end. The fact that most human beings make efforts to try and defy the natural sequence of events; nature has always prevailed in such circumstance. This is for example a person suffering from a terminal illness such as cancer much as such a person might try putting up a brave face, the eventual outcome is always predictable and the victim eventually succumbs to the ravages of the ravages of the disease. Having affirmed this we can therefore confirm that much as one may make efforts to curtail the due course of events that are outside ones control, they eventually follow the natural course. This means that if one for instance is suffering from cancer and they eventually succumb to it, then the courage they have portrayed in the face of the does not count since the death eventually  takes its toll and the courage does nothing to prevent it happening.

The second premise to my argument is that human suffering is unjustifiable. Many a times when people are faced by dire situations, they always console themselves with the reasoning that they are going to put up a brave fight. I make reference once again to the case of a cancer patient. Many do not allow themselves to give in to the ravages of such a disease, they therefore hang onto the hope that they will put up a brave fight before they eventually succumb to the disease. These arguments and many other of this nature do not and cannot justify human suffering. Ideally the creation of man was intended to herald a good life with happiness as the hallmarks of this human life. Divine force provide human beings with the many elements of nature such as rain and sunshine just to ensure human happiness. The extent of courage that one puts up in such adversity therefore does not belie the fact that they have gone through serious pain to put up a courageous fight.  The question here is does the courage one demonstrates in such circumstances help or justify the fact that one has suffered? To this end I suppose no one would agree to suffer for a futile course. Suffering for a fight whose eventual result is certain is a major disregard to the fact that divine intent in creating human beings is for them to be happy. Therefore irrespective of the many arguments that different scholars may front on this subject, the fact is human suffering cannot be justified.
