The Road to Eldorado is a fun and fascinating movie directed by “Bilbo Bergeron, Will Finn, Don Paul, David Silverman, and Jeffery Katzenberg” (“The Road to Eldorado”). Releasing in 2000, the animated film delighted audiences with humor for all ages, as well as fun, quirky, fights with the main characters.
The movie opens on the two main characters, Tulio and Miguel, in 16th century south Spain. Two con artists and thief’s, they obtain a map to the fabled city of Eldorado while cheating in a game of dice. After that, the antics really begin, as their methods for success lead them to being discovered and they miraculously end up stowing away on a ship with the antagonist, Hernan Cortes. Naturally, and for comedy sake, they are discovered but escape in a life boat with Cortes’ horse. Finally arriving in the city of legend, the citizens of El Dorado take them to be gods sent from above and scramble to please them. Not only are they looked upon as gifts, being shown favor by the Gods, but when Cortes unerringly follows towards the city and poses a threat for the people, Miguel and Tulio step up to save the day. Even if that involves crashing a ship loaded with gold into the entrance to halt the invading forces.
The movie really shows the consequences of betrayal, as it is one of the ‘El Doradians’ that attempts to lead Cortes to the city in perusal of his own greed. Viewers also see the strength of friendship, the power of love, and a sense of justice, even if it is emanating from men we saw cheating and stealing in the beginning of the movie. The character development from the beginning to the end really shows to men growing up and taking charge, not only of their lives but of their destiny and accepting the consequences’ of their actions.
