A culture is a practice common to an organization or a group of people. People’s values and belief systems are integrated into their culture. In the mining industry safety should be one of the key concerns.
Creating a safety culture within the mining industry is essential as it provides miners with a sense of reassurance that their safety has been considered. It can be achieved in a variety of ways. One of these ways includes training miners on the basic safety measures and on the measures they need to take on aftermath of an accident, injury or fatality in the course of their work.

Statistically, it is a well known fact that a significant percentage of people live below a dollar a day. It also happens that a good number of miners comprise this number hence many cannot afford health care in case of an accident. Hence senior management is sensitized on the issue and should take responsibility of assessing human risks and communicating to their employees on how such mining hazards can be avoided.
Equipment in this industry should also undergo a variety of checks to ensure that they are at optimum efficiency and in line with the system. Such check-ups reduce the number of injuries, fatalities and accidents involving workers and properties.

I also find it of utmost importance to mention that deep mining should come with its own set of safety rules and regulations. For instance, mine shafts should be assessed to ensure that they are supported by contraptions such as beams hence reducing the risk of them collapsing when the miners are at work.
Creating a safety culture means changing the existing one or upgrading it to suit the needs of the new age. Mining is no longer a small venture where people work at the risk of losing their lives but a multi-million enterprise that ensures all its components working efficiently, including the miners. Hence mining can be regarded as vehicle for social transformation.
