Interpersonal communication is probably one of the most, if not the most, important and essential skill that has to be learned and used profficiently by any person either in every day life, or in business.  This vital skill ensures well-built and stable relationship with people that a person communicates with, thus ensuring success in any kind of business that a person handles.  Undoubtedly, what you think of youself is what you are going to project on others, therefore being sure in yourself is an extremely important factor in the interpersonal communication of any type.  So how does one’s self concept influence communications at work?  Why is it so vital?

A person that is sure in his abilities, not only to communicate, but his abilities as a human being in general, is not only much more successful, but also much more productive.  He/She does his/her best, though knowing that everything he/she does is correct and is up to scratch.  In the business world people who are not sure in themselves do not last long.  For instance, if you were called by your boss and were blamed for an error in the report which you didn’t make and you are not able to communicate with him in a certain, self-esteemed, way, you are going to be punished for nothing, only due to the fact that you were not sure in yourself.  “Some experts have assumed that individuals that are high in self-esteem are more verbal and more competent communicators than those low in self-esteem” (Maruscsak, 2006).  Being entirely sure of yourself is a key stone in the interpersonal communication, especially in the contemporary world of fierce competition.

“In recent years, interest in interpersonal communication has mushroomed” (Wood, 1998), therefore, knowing how to show your best sides and be ready to face all the difficulties and obstacles of the business world, one has to learn how to be positive and confident in oneself, and this will, consequently, lead to financial and personal triumph.
