There are many types of projects that businesses commission to help promote their company name; or simply because that is the type of work the company does. There are issues to be evaluated with e-commerce, however, and it is time that they are analyzed. Why, for example, are IT projects, such as website development or redesign, less likely to be delivered on time? Why are they generally not within their budget in the way of large building construction projects? And for that matter, how can project management software help IT project managers achieve their goals? Although there are many responses to all of the above questions, the main reason is that computers are finite, finicky, and hard to predict.

For a start, IT projects are less likely to be completed in a timely manner because there are almost always unforeseen complications in programming, design, internet connection, network issues, etc… Computer systems are hard to predict sometimes due to their complex make-up; the smallest detail that is missing, even if it is just a bracket in the programming code, can destroy hours of hard work with one click or push of a button. There is also the issue that they routinely run over budget. First off, look at the comparison with a construction company. They are usually within the bounds of their quotes because structures can be adjusted, different materials can be used, the process is just thinking. Plus, there is the added benefit that the construction industry has been around for all time.

Computers, on the other hand, are still a growing industry in which people are still learning all of the aspects. For that reason, when something new is attempted to be accomplished, serious ‘think outside the box’ skills have to be applied. It can take time and the solutions are not always inexpensive or cheap. Then there is also the fact that a IT projects can branch in many different directions and most of the times all the leads have to be followed to an end. In construction there is a straight forward plan and every person on the job knows his, or her, responsibilities. Now, could management software be made of use by an IT team? Most definitely; software is designed to be helpful to its users, otherwise it would quickly be made obsolete.

In conclusion, computers can be hard to judge; there are  just so many little details to take into consideration. Still, once a project is completed successfully, everyone’s life is made just a little bit easier.
