Improving Reading in Health Class – Essay Sample

Individualized Education Plan frequently referred to as IEP, is a program that is aimed to meet the exceptional educational needs of a child. As defined by federal regulations, it is supposed to help children with specific individual requirements to reach their goals. Individual needs are generally caused by different types of disabilities. The inalienable part of the IEP as a process is determining whether or not the child meets the criteria for special education services. Specifically, child’s disability is supposed to have a negative effect on his or her educational success. Thus if a disorder a child suffers from influences his/her studying process in an undesirable way, than IEP is needed.  By disabilities various types of health disorders are meant. Normally they are divided into ten generalizing categories.  These are autism, developmentally delayed, sensory, neurological, intellectual, emotional, communication, physical disabilities, specific learning disability, or other health issues.

Disabled children’s involvement and progress in the general curriculum is crucial. However, there are courses such as health class that take on a special significance for kids whose everyday performance is dependent on how well their bodies operate.  Health class original meaning is to lay a foundation of knowledge and an understanding of the existing resources that are able to be of assistance to students when making healthy decisions throughout their lifetimes. The course is designed to encourage responsible decision making and to make students realize how their choices and actions may have various consequences. Normally, students obtain necessary information through conversation on the issues, meditation on stories that deal with health subjects, scientific and medical evidences, and up-to-date investigations. Should there be some different approach to discussing the same topics with children whose understanding and interpretation of obtained informational basis may differ radically from that of the normal children? Obviously yes, there should be one.

Moreover, the approach to communicating vitally important ideas to disabled students should differ depending on what type of disability a child actually suffers from. For instance, for a student with emotional and behavioral disabilities, overall educational process must consist of not only academic issues but also behavioral issues. The student with E/BD may commit an act of verbal aggression. The current level of performance must specify a description of the strength, length, and regularity of the verbal aggression. As a result, a functional evaluation of the behavior is a necessity when defining the present levels of performance. In order to reduce verbal aggression, personnel must instruct the student in anger control and disagreement resolution skills.

Learning disabilities from which IEP students usually suffer, often involve problems with such basic skills as writing and reading. However, do we know much about the troubles problem readers actually go through? The widespread prejudice about students with learning disabilities is that they are simply more stupid than their peers. Nowadays we are getting more and more knowledgeable about the original causes of such problems, and became aware of the fact that problem readers may simply be ill. There are several types of reading disorders. Some of them are dyslexia (characterized by problems with understanding and exercising the alphabetic principle), problems with reading understanding, lack of reading fluency, sythopina (when the brain doesn’t search out the information; as well when somebody reads a letter and observe it shifting into different letters, which results into the words being wrong).

Dyslexia is probably the most widely recognized learning disability which is chiefly because of Barbara Bush’s attempts to make adults conscious of the problem of kids with this and other learning disabilities. “Dyslexia appears to be a complex linguistic deficiency marked by the inability to represent and access the sound of a word in order to help remember the word and the inability to break words into component sounds” (Child Development Institute, 2009). Evidences about children struggling to conquer their learning disabilities emerge in the mass media rather frequently these days. Shouldn’t this issue also be added to the list of topics discussed in health class? Providing children with an insight into the problem may generate a better understanding of how it should be dealt with.
