American Society after War – Essay Sample

American Society after War – Essay Sample

Any war conflict somehow changes the country where it has taken place, and, undoubtedly, the people that live in that particular region.  Whether positive or negative, the society or its traditions, culture, or way of living transforms and becomes slightly different.  There are certain factors, like economic, political, diplomatic, military, and some other factors that determine these changes.  American society had a long history of various transformations, though the country itself is quite young.  Therefore, let us look at some wars and their effect on the American people.

The Civil War that actually created the kind of a free country that we have today, was probably the most important for the American society.  “The Union, led by President Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party, opposed the expansion of slavery into territories owned by the United States and rejected any right of secession” (American Civil War).  Firstly, the seccesion, which was one of the reasons for starting a war, was stopped, and, moreover, the slavery was completely eliminated.  The Reconstruction that followed the end of the war brought profound changes in the US policies and the Constitution.  For instance, three amendments were added that extended govermental protection of the US citizens regardless there skin color, and some voting changes.

World War 1, or the The War to End All Wars, as some people call it, was vital for the newly formed United States of America.  At those times, “The United States pursued a policy of isolationism, avoiding conflict whilst trying to broker a peace” (Bach 54).  However, when seven American trading ships were destroyed by the German submarines, Woodrow Wilson announced war with Germany.  This was a great opportunity for the African-Americans to show their own country and the whole world that skin color does not imply any differences in honour, strength, and courage.  This was an opportunity to determine the US as a truly democratic country.  The minds of the people, the way they were thinking in terms of their insolation from the whole world community was changed completely.

World War II, which started in 1914 for the US with  the attack on Pearl Harbor, was< I believe, the strongest strike that America has ever experienced.  The attack on Pearl Harbor literally enraged the American society and made it strong and fierce from the inside.  Moreover, “it helped to pull the economy out of depression because the required production of military material provided much-needed jobs, and women entered the workforce in large numbers for the first time” (United States).

Even nowadays, the United States of America continues to emerge itself into different war conflicts, like Iran, for instance, which has some consequences and changes on the American society, nonetheless, today these consequences are mostly emotional, as far as the US remain the main super-power in the world.
