In his article, Fitzhugh argues on the Transitional period from Pre-Dorset to Dorset Culture (3000-2200 BC) of the Paleoeskimo tradition in the Eastern Arctic with the intention of continuing the explanation about the Labrador Paleoeskimo Culture History. Attempting to describe the transitional period, Fitzhugh uses Nukasusutok, which is the first site found dating back to the beginning of the transitional period in Labrador. Describing the Transitional period cultures as being phases where dynamic demographic and economic feedback to social and environmental shifts are observable, responses are especially vivid as changes in culture and territory. These transitional overlaps have certain characteristics that suggest continuity or change (either early or late) in Paleoeskimo traditions. In this case, Nukasusutok is a great illustration of how complex appearances can make it complicated to resemble to a single culture. Nukasusutok, resembling some Early Paleoeskimo dwelling site aspects, also varies in other aspects like the choice of location. Whether these differences in question are indicators of development of regional variances based on several various foundations is an open discussion. At the same time it is difficult to say whether these “subcultures” are derived from one single Paleoeskimo tradition, even though many similarities point towards this idea.
