Types of Criticism – Essay Sample

Types of Criticism – Essay Sample

After analyzing and studying different types of criticism, I have come to the conclusion that the most productive and efficient way to criticize is to combine the Reader Response and Historical criticisms. When working together, this combination reveals the biographical or historical reasons for writing a specific text or poem, and, additionally, gives a chance to the readers to form an opinion of their own. In order to prove my point, I would like to analyze “Her Kind” by Anne Sexton. From a Reader Response perspective, we may notice a strong scent of disgust, anger, and disappointment while reading the verses of this poem. The reader strives to understand the reason for such feelings, but, evidently the true meaning is hidden in the biography of the author. Anne Sexton was a woman. Moreover, she had a nervous disorder, which forced her to spend much time in a hospital. Anne Sexton was an outcast, an exile, who was constantly stared at. The society has rejected her, for she was female and for she was sick. Needless to say, the Feministic approach helps a lot in analyzing this poem, due to the mentioned reasons. As a result, “Her Kind” presents a witch that is misunderstood and mistreated. From a historical perspective, Sexton could use an example of a witch, based on the European witch trials, which occurred in the 17th century. Witches were basically women, who had religious, political, or other opinions that varied from the opinions of the society. The Reader Response technique helps us to feel the intensity of the comparison, provided by the Historical and Feministic approaches. This is exactly why sometimes it is vital to use several types of criticism to better understand a text.
