One of the main rules of marketing is that there is no such thing as bad publicity. If a thing, event, or person is in the center of attention, it is famous, regardless of one’s attitude toward it. Even though ‘Titanic’ was filmed more than ten years ago, it remains rather controversial and is still a subject of many discussions. Most people either absolutely love or entirely hate it and the emotions are rarely in between. From this perspective, Titanic is one of the most successful movies of all times and, in my opinion, one of the best.

First of all, this film presents a historic event. Although it is not completely accurate, it still informs the viewers about a great tragedy in the history of transportation. Titanic was a real ship, largest at the time when it was built. It allowed the people to make long-distance trips in comfort and enjoy a variety of services on board. The ship was constructed very well and its interior was very beautiful. Before the movie most people did not even know this story or could have just heard that a big ship was once destroyed by an iceberg but did not have any details. So the film is also useful from the educational point of view as it stimulates young people to find out more about the ship itself, the tragedy, or even about the history of sea transportation.

Secondly, the movie portrays the class controversies in the beginning of 20^th century, showing the true emotions and problems. Rose DeWitt Bukater is from a family that has lost its wealth. But they attempt to demonstrate that they still belong to the upper class, trying to dress and behave accordingly. Rose’s marriage with Caledon “Cal” Hockley is supposed to solve all their problems and her feelings are not taken into account at all. She is forced to marry him despite his character and bad traits as he is wealthy and influential. Moreover, he belongs to the same class as her family so this relationship is supported while her love with Jack is forbidden as he is from different social group.

Two best scenes of the movie demonstrate such social gap very clearly. As everybody believes that Jack saved Rose, her fiancé (Cal) has an obligation to invite Jack to dinner at first-class table. It becomes obvious that the differences between the classes has been extremely significant and the barriers not so easy to overcome. Jack is surrounded by snobbish wealthy people that do not accept him into their community. He is not treated as a human being, equal to them, as he does not ‘belong’ to their group.

The second scene shows the people who were considered to be the ‘third class’ when Jack invites Rose to the event of dancing. It is symbolic that their part of the ship is located on the lower level and the services, available to them, are very limited and they do not enjoy the comfort of the first class. But the most important is that they are treated differently. It is a normal practice even today to provide fewer services to the people that pay less. However, it should not mean that such people are treated without respect as they are still human beings.
