Conjunctivitis, also known as pinkeye, as an irritation of the mucous membranes, which are called conjunctiva, that lines the inner surface of an individuals eyelids, as well as the whites of an eye.  Conjunctivitis, which is extremely contagious in some cases, may be caused from an infection and/or an allergic reaction.  However, when treated properly and immediately, conjunctivitis usually disappears within two weeks or three weeks at most.

The symptoms of conjunctivitis differ based upon the cause of the irritation.  An individual with conjunctivitis will demonstrate extreme redness of the whites of the individual’s eye.  Also, an individual with conjunctivitis will experience itching and a rough sensation in the eye.  In addition, green or white discharge from the eyes may occur, as well as yellow discharge that forms into dried crusts during sleep binding ones eyelids together.  An individual may experience extreme tearing, aversion to bright lights and/or swelling with the eyelids.  If an individual is experiencing any of these symptoms, he/she should immediately seek assistance in seeing their eye doctor.

The eye doctor will take an examination of the eyes.  Also, the doctor may swab the conjunctiva for an analysis of any abnormal activity.  This kind of testing, known as supplemental testing may occur when the conjunctivitis is not responding to the prescribed treatment.    The doctor may also determine the sensitivity of the conjunctiva and external eye tissue by using bright lights and/or magnification to connect a diagnosis.  The optometrist will be able to conclude a diagnose of conjunctivitis by obtaining any of these tests.

To treat conjunctivitis, the individual that is experiencing these discomforting symptoms must consult a doctor or ophthalmologist to verify the diagnosis of conjunctivitis.  It is significant to clarify whether the conjunctivitis is originated as bacterial conjunctivitis or viral conjunctivitis.  Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria, in some cases STDs, and requires antibiotic treatment in various different forms, such as eye drops, ointments or pills.  “Eye drops or ointments may need to be applied to the inside of the eyelid three to four times a day for five to seven days.  Pills may need to be taken for several days. The infection should improve within a week (WebMD 2011).”  Another origin of conjunctivitis may result from viruses caused by common colds.  Viral conductivities usually cure itself without complications or prescribed medication.  “Viral conjunctivitis can be highly contagious.  Avoid contact with others and wash hands frequently (WebMD 2011).”
