Diabetes Overview – Essay Sample

Diabetes mellitus, simply known as diabetes, is a syndrome of disordered metabolism, which results in unusually high levels of blood sugar. In other words, it is a chronic illness that involves unnatural human body’s ability to use sugar. Both genetic and environmental factors affect its development leading to prolonged high blood sugars level. Diabetes is differentiated by either lack of ability of human body to produce insulin, which is used to lower blood sugars, or inability of insulin to perform its natural physiological operations. Without insulin, the cells become famished of glucose energy even despite the presence of high level of glucose in the blood stream. It affects organs, such as kidneys, eyes, blood vessels, that are dependent on blood sugar. High blood sugars can cause blindness, increased risk of heart attack, paralysis of the stomach, and kidney failure. According to National Diabetes Statistics in 2007 about 23.5 million people in the United States are diagnosed to have diabetes mellitus. Of those 23.5 million people, 1.6 million people are aged 20 and younger (National Diabetic Statistics 2008). This decease can cause serious health problems or lead to premature death, but patients can control the flow of the illness and minimize the risk of complications. Since the insulin has been medically created all forms of the decease became treatable. However, still there is no medication to cure it completely.
