Comparison between Eastern Philosophies – Essay Sample

Comparison between Eastern Philosophies – Essay Sample

As far as my task is to compare two Eastern philosophies, I decided to pick the two most prominent and famous philosophies and give more details about each of them.

“Buddhism is a system of beliefs based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, an Indian prince later known as the Buddha, or one who is Awake – derived from the Sanskrit ‘bud’, ‘to awaken’” (Eastern Philosophies). Buddhism is a spiritual tradition that focuses on personal spiritual expansion and the achievement of a profound insight into the genuine nature of life. Buddhism teaches that all life is interrelated, so compassion is normal and significant. Here are the key stones of this religion: actions have cost, therefore our lives are affected by our past events; consciousness continues after death, and obtains representation in a future life; by following the Buddha’s path one avoids the cycle of longing and suffering.  At the core of the Buddha’s philosophy lie the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path which guide the Buddhist on his passageway of Enlightenment. According to Buddhism, meditation is a way of taking control of the mind so that it grows to be peaceful and alert, and the meditator turns out to be more aware.

“Confucianism (developed around the teachings of Confucius) based on a set of Chinese classic texts and may still be considered a major underlying element of Far-East culture” (Eastern Philosophies). It is a complex system of moral, social, political and religious values which had marvelous pressure on the past of China. Confucius strongly believed that society should live according to the principle that states that everything is corresponds to a general principle. If every citizen took on the responsibility of acting in accordance with the natural principle that identifies his/her social status, then there would be agreement and peace at all times.  Moreover, love and human-heartedness should guide an individual on his way of managing his/her social duties. The Confucian should act without regard for the effect of their actions, as far as acting for income or own interest was abhorrence to Confucius.

As far as you can see, these two religions has certain values in common, however, are basically two different Eastern philosophies with its own rules, traditions, and teachings. I personally believe that Confucianism is more persuasive as far as it is somewhat conservative and society-related. It describes how people should interact with each other for mutual success and harmony with others.
