Phenomenology – Essay Sample

Phenomenology – Essay Sample

What is phenomenology?  After about half a century of the first works of Edward Husseri, it may seem strange that this question is still being asked.  However, the fact is that this question has still not been directly answered or proved.  In philosophy, psychology and cognitive science, perception is the process of managing attentiveness or understanding of an individual’s sensory information.  Phenomenology is a type of consciousness, which an individual’s knowledge about the world and how it is perceived through his or her own experience, sense or consciousness.  First, I will discuss the theory of realism, and than I will discuss the WT Stace’s arguments of phenomenology.  Which will lead us into the counter arguments of phenomenology. Though, this theory of perception is usually more difficult to understand than other perception theories, phenomenology is an idea that modern science has believed to be false.  Phenomenology is the study of essences: the essence of perception, or perhaps the essence of consciousness.

The theory of realism is the belief that the world is more or less as we perceive of it.  The traditional definition is that in realism, objects always maintain its physical state and will exist, regardless if they are in the presence of an individual or not.

“The Refutation of Realism,” which is in response to Moore’s significant “The Refutation of Idealism.”  WT Stace refrained from any direct argument because he felt that realism is neither meaningless nor false.  However, he stated “there is absolutely no reason for asserting” it is true, yet he still said it “ought not to be believed.”

First, Stace claims, “there are only two ways in which it could be asserted that the existence of any sense-object can be established.  One is by sense-perception, the other by interference from sense-perception.”  Stace continues with the argument that neither of these arguments are adequate enough to prove the unperceived existence, Stace used a piece of paper to explain his argument.
