Existence of God – Essay Sample

Existence of God – Essay Sample

Introduction

I will argue in favor of the Cosmological arguments brought forward by St. Aquinas that God exists from the background of his logical explanations. However, the existence of God cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubts in view of the ontological arguments as expressed by St. Anselm’s ontological arguments and further illustrated by Rene Descartes mathematical arguments (Swinburne 33). The philosophy of religion is therefore marred with substantial controversy since logical proofs exhibited by philosophical arguments are always in conflict with religious beliefs.

Alston and Plantinga therefore explore to merge both perspectives but the evidence in belief does not warrant a conclusive solution to the logical patterns of thought. Individuals are therefore left make choices personal experiences, belief in a supreme being and to make logical arguments from premises that are true and factual. The arguments therefore continue to prove that God exists with a continuous search for the philosophical proofs within the limit of human understanding and beyond mystery.

St. Thomas Aquinas’ Cosmological Argument

Aquinas observed that everything in the world is in a continuous state of motion. As such, there must have been a prime mover that is in itself stationary which then sets everything in the world to move. This non-moving force that gives virtually everything the force of momentum and acceleration should be God (Swinburne 45). When God set the first thing in motion, the sequence of events is such that the rest of the things adjacent to it began to move in the specified direction of motion. Eventually, all things created by God end up in motion by the original force of momentum He applied.

God is therefore the ultimate force that we need in order to respond to the many challenges that we face in our daily lives. We therefore need to constantly consult God for direction in our endeavors in order to avoid getting confused on the way. The creation of God should always seek for guidance from Him since they are subject to move in the direction that pleases Him (Plantinga 15). Deviation from the direction of motion means that there is no more force or energy to continue thereby decelerating to stagnation.  This is dangerous because the point of stagnation could actually result in death. Life and death are therefore in the hands of God who is the Supreme Being that should be feared and respected at all times.

For everything to exist there must be a reason which is defined by the ultimate maker of everything. God should have existed before everything and should be considered to hold the mystery about the purpose for every creature. God is also the perfect state of everything that he has created in the universe. The best that can exist is God who then designs other creatures in the subordinate state. Here also lies the contradiction. The truth of the matter is that there are evil and bad things that happen in this world that is somehow created by only one Supreme Being, God. How did God in his ultimate perfect state degrade into designing things that would contradict his nature and existence is a quite confusing.  It therefore creates loopholes in the perfect nature of God who in this case appears to have weaknesses that could lead to the unfortunate events that are characterized by evil (Swinburne 62).

This cosmological they can be further exemplified by the big bang theory which states that an explosion in the space led the existence of the earth without a detail account on the origin of that explosion. The ultimate force that resulted in that explosion should just be God. There should also have been an origin for God which provided Him with the immense powers and knowledge to manipulate the whole universe. There must have been some greater being with higher powers and eternal existence. However, our human imagination may not allow us to think beyond God’s prowess. God therefore created human beings and remains the Supreme Being that controls events in the world at his own will. Our philosophical understanding about God should therefore be confined to our subjective nature since we are his creatures.
