Imagine a woman, who was parking her car beside her house after working ten hours night shift, and suddenly a man came out of the bushes holding a knife in his hand. The woman did not scream and did not move. She realized that the man was not going to murder her – the only thing he wanted was her body. An hour later, she was lying on her favorite couch and the dog was licking her hand that has a strong smell of whisky. She was drunk. She was raped. That night a child was conceived. Quietly, without a scream or sound.  What would you do in such situation? Call for help and get slaughtered? Most likely, next morning you would go to the nearest hospital to get rid of the shame that people call pregnancy. But what if she cannot do that? What if she has to provide the hospital with a list of reasons for the abortion? The procedure can take moths and then, who knows if the abortion will still be possible. My goal today is to prove to my audience that abortion has to be legalized and there are certain reasons for such a firm statement. Firstly, it is going to lessen the death rate of women who have abortions in secret. Secondly, it will establish a clear idea of what privacy in a free society is. And thirdly, it is going to diminish the number of unwanted children. Now, let me do my best to elaborate myself on these statements and try to persuade you that abortion does have to be legalized.

The main point of the first reason for legalizing abortion is that laws in opposition to abortion murder women. Legal abortion not only protects women’s lives, it, in addition, safeguards their health. “For tens of thousands of women with heart disease, kidney disease, severe hypertension, sickle-cell anemia and severe diabetes, and other illnesses that can be life-threatening, the availability of legal abortion has helped avert serious medical complications that could have resulted from childbirth” (Sloan). Before legal abortion, such women’s choices were bounded by hazardous illegal abortion or risky childbirth. The main idea is to stop illegal abortions that lead to unpredictable consequences. No one denies that making something illegal triggers problems for people who desire to do it, or that people who disobey the law from time to time get hurt in the course of action, or that breaking the regulation may damage someone’s reputation. But these are not disputes in opposition to making something unlawful. The whole purpose of having a law is to make life complex for people who intend to violate it. “The civil rights of the victims are more significant than the inconvenience to those who would exploit them” (Sloan). When women feel it is utterly necessary, they will decide to have abortions, even confidentially, with no medical care, in unsafe conditions. “From 1990 through 1997, the number of legal induced abortions gradually declined” (Abortion Surveillance). This data shows that after the abortion was legalized, the number of abortions actually performed went down which illustrates a psychological impact of legalization of abortion on women .In the two decades before abortion was legal in the U.S., it’s been anticipated that almost a million women per year wanted to perform illegal abortions, consequently, all were forced to act as if they were against the law.
