Since the terrible events of September 11, 2001, America has united to fight the war on terrorism. Eight years have passed and we are still engaged in one of the most costly and dangerous conflict United States have ever experienced. As a result, thousands of people all of the country started to question the success of the warfare and its benefits for the civilians and the country as a whole. So is United States making progress in fighting the war on terrorism?

In my personal opinion, the war on terrorism, declared after a number of terroristic attacks in the United States, Great Britain, and Spain, has not bear any fruit so far. According to certain officials, the attempt to find and destroy terrorists all over the world, particularly in the Middle East, has never been paused, and the United States government is doing everything possible to protect our people from potential attacks and terroristic acts. Nevertheless, the facts and figures talk for themselves. Over 4000 soldiers were killed in Iraq alone since the beginning of the campaign (Casualties in Iraq, 2009). Weapons of mass destruction were not found, even if they have ever existed. More than a million of Iraqi citizens were slaughtered during the bombings. Terrorist groups were not devastated. Another objective of the war was to create an ally in the Middle East in the face of Iraq, which would assist in fighting the radicals. This goal was not reached either. “Meanwhile, however, the impact of the Iraq war on Muslim “hearts and minds”, on which the fate of that war his administration itself has said will depend, has been devastating, according to recent surveys of opinion in Islamic countries stretching from Morocco to Indonesia” (Global Issue, 2006).

To summarize, I am under strong impression that the United States is not making any progress in the current war on terrorism, but rather makes the situation worse with every single day. Treasury is being emptied, human lives are being destroyed, and the fear of terrorist attacks is still in the heart of our people.
