This is a play. This play is pleasant and memorable. It was written by Tennessee Williams and involves four characters. This play was initially written and meant to be a played on screen for MGM. Tennessee was given the contract for the play.  William got the ideas for this play from his short stories In Chicago the play became famous in the year 1944 and in the year 1945 it came first by winning the New York Drama Critics Circle. The Glass Menagerie made Williams fall among the American’s best play writers .It was his only successful scene.

‘Portrait of a Girl in Glass’ was one of the short stories written by Williams and where he wrote the scene from. He wrote this play in June the yea r 1943 and published it in the year 1948.  This play is seen by a huge number of people to be a play about William way of living, his deeds  and the entire play is mainly about his own life than his any other work. In this play, William is Tom and his mother would be Amanda. His sister whose name is Rose and in the play she is referred to Laura. Laura is sick and likely to be mentally sick. Her nickname in this scene is Blue rose. Her disability is as an effect of an unlucky student in high school. Suggestions about Laura’s character show that her place in the play is based on Tennessee himself, putting into consideration about his obsessive nature and also focusing on a particular side of life.

The Play has major characters like; Laura Wingfield who plays as a lame a naïve daughter to Amanda, Tom W who takes a part of the play as Laura’s brother. His mother is pressuring him to find a good man for his sister and also work hard to maintain his job in a shoe factory to help his family. Another character is Amanda W. she is a mother to both Laura and Tom. who keeps on remembering of the days spent on the plantation in the Sothern farm and the night she had with 17 chap callers. Last but not least is Jim O’Conner. Tom’s pal and work mate. Tom invites him for dinner and Amanda hospitality towards him is like that one towards Laura’s first chap caller. The minor characters involve, Mr. Wingfield. A husband to Amanda and who happened to abandon  his family more than 15 years ago. He is only seen on a big picture on a wall.

About the setting of the story, Mr. Wingfield house has the largest potion while the other rooms are partitioned by curtains. There is existence of a kitchen and a living room. There is also a fire escape exit from which the players use as an entrance and exit to the house.

In the plot of the play, Tom initiates the scene as a remembrance of his own past memories footed on his mother and sister. Mr. Wingfield left like 16 years ago. Amanda is left straggles with her family. She has memories of her in the feted Southern belle. She mainly wishes this for her daughter who is crippled scared about the outside world. Tom is a worker in the warehouse and tries with all the effort to maintain his family (Tennesee, p34-89). Tom is really fed up with their poor life and to avoid thinking about it, he spends his free time in cheap movie cinemas. Laura’s mother is determined to get her a gentleman. One day Tom comes home for dinner with a nice boy by the name Jim in the presence of his mother.

Amanda now thinks that Jim could be the gentleman she has always waited and hoped for. Jim and Laura knew each other from High School but he was engaged. Later in the scene Laura and Jim have a dance and Jim. Jim accidentally rubs the Glass Menagerie, making the glass unicorn on the floor. Unfortunately its horn breaks off. Laura says that now it was just like the other horses. Amanda learns about Jim’s engagement, she is annoyed with Tom and especially remembering of the way they have put a lot of effort in all the preparations and what it has costed them.  She accuses him of his selfishness and tells him to go to the movie where he always goes. Tom leaves and never comes back. Before he goes, he bids Laura farewell.

No other play in the current theatre that has pleased the eye of the Americans than the one for Williams ‘The Glass Menagerie. It was an envy of a success which up lifted his career as a playwritter and earned him fame.
