Before starting the massive invasion aimed at central and Eastern Europe, Hitler and his advisories had to decide on the plan, there were going to perform in the eastern front. The first option was to engage in a war of annihilation, taking the Napoleon war as an example, while the second alternative was a war of attrition. Hitler, being an extremely self-confident and somewhat exaggerative leader, chose the first option. This plan, eventually called Barbarossa, was built on a number of reasons, which, in the end, turned out to be the obstacles and causes of failure. Firstly, Hitler was determined to defeat the USSR in the Eastern front merely in two or three month, thus relieving the Western front, which was presented by Great Britain. He hoped that the British, seeing the destruction and humiliation of the Slavs, would plead for a peace treaty, thus strengthening German positions in Europe. However, Russia turned out to be a stronghold that Hitler was unable to demolish. Secondly, Barbarossa was founded on racist principles, considering Slavs as slaves and workers for a future German civilization. Throughout the whole invasion of Nazi soldiers in Central and Eastern Europe, civilians, including women and children, were massacred and slaughtered ruthlessly. This was a grand mistake of the German aggressors, as far as millions of people devastated by Bolshevism, were ready to join the German ‘liberators’, but observing even worse actions from the Nazi side, they started to fight for their freedom with vicious determination.
