Bambara’s The Lesson – Essay Sample

Bambara’s The Lesson – Essay Sample

In paragraph 44 Sylvia says, “Where we are is who we are, Miss Moore always pointin out. But it don’t necessarily have to be that way.” What does Miss Moore mean by this? Do you agree? What does Miss Moore expect the children to do to change the situation?

The quote” Where we are is who we are” is an abstract of living poor is who we are. It is like as if poor people living in a poor area and have limited income to live by. The children were tempted to buy a sailboat toy and another toy but they did not have enough money to buy the boat while other children have the money to buy toys. However, Miss Moore said, “But it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way”. What Miss Moore meant was that in general, people who are poor and living poor doesn’t have to stay poor and be bitter about being poor and or that people who are rich and living rich doesn’t have to stay rich and be bitter being rich. The idea is that poor people can fight their way out of the slum and even to move out of the slum and earn a decent income and live in a nice area and that is the way to be satisfied. The idea for the rich people is to fight for their respect for having the haves and choose their circle of friends who can relate to one another and be satisfied. What Miss Moore expects from the children to do to change the situation is to accept the difference in children on what they have and don’t have and who they are. It is not necessary to be enemies because of what children don’t have or have or who they are. In that sense, Miss Moore encourages children to respect one another, not necessarily to be friends to one another, and not necessarily to share one another if one doesn’t choose to. I do agree what Miss Moore said to the children because Miss Moore tries to put sense in children, explore the unknown environs, and accept the differences in people, culture, norms, and all other characteristics.
