In John 3 Jesus talks to Nicodemus and tries to get him to understand who God is and what the kingdom of God is. Nicodemus and all the other people understand Jesus literally, which is the major mistake of the people of those times, and when Jesus says that “you should be born again”, he does not understand. Nicodemus thinks that Jesus will teach them how to get to the heavenly kingdom, nonetheless, Jesus teaches them how to change themselves and live in this world first. Jesus compares him and all the things that are rightful and just to light and everything evil – to darkness. He says that he is the true light, and that everyone who believes in him stands on the way to the light.
In the story about the Samaritan woman we can see how Jesus breaks certain ‘rules’ of the time he is living in: firstly, he speaks to a woman, and secondly, he speaks to a Samaritan woman which is completely strange to the people of that time. This shows us that God does not care about your nationality. The only thing that matters is your inside world. Here the woman understands Jesus literally when he speaks of himself as living water. What he means is that he will be ‘water’ to those who want and believe in him, and he will give life to those who try to be in the ‘light’.
Jesus also compares himself to the ‘Bread of Life’. This comparison is similar to the one about the water, as far as what is says is that physical reality is nothing, though spiritual awareness and belief in God and Jesus will give a person everything he needs.
“I am the way”, says Jesus and he is correct – believe in him and his Father and you will get everything you need to live the full of light, water, and bread. There is no other road to God rather then through his only begotten son – Jesus. Believing in him will lead you straight to the heavenly kingdom, which waits for those who found inner peace and let this peace out as well.
